BayTowne Revitalization Begins

PENFIELD, N.Y. – Jan. 14, 2013 – In a unanimous decision, the Penfield Town Board voted in December in favor of rezoning a parcel of property adjacent to the BayTowne shopping center from residential to commercial. The decision brings closure to a five-year collaborative process that has ended in a compromise plan between the developer of the shopping center, DiMarco Group, the Town of Penfield and Penfield residents. The approved plan includes the rezoning of 7.95 acres of land adjacent to the shopping center from residential to general business, an expansion of the current Walmart store to a Walmart Supercenter, and the creation of a street of shops within the center.

“This is an important decision not only for BayTowne, but for the Town of Penfield, as well,” said John DiMarco II, president of DiMarco Group. “While the process was long, it produced an outcome that is beneficial and considerate of all who live, shop and work in Penfield. We’ve already started bringing to life our plan to create a lively, vibrant and busy shopping center here at BayTowne.”

Construction at BayTowne began immediately following the Town of Penfield board meeting with the cut-through of the former Tops building during a celebratory event on Dec. 20. This cut-through initiates the construction of a “street of shops” environment at the center and brings to life DiMarco’s vision to create an experience within BayTowne that is unlike any shopping center in the area.

DiMarco said he and his leasing team have had ongoing conversations with retailers and restaurants regarding the leasing of space at the shopping center.

“The types of businesses we are talking to and that we hope to attract will invigorate the Penfield Crossroads neighborhood and create a vibrant shopping corridor for thousands of shoppers annually,” he said.

Construction is expected to be completed in 18 months.
